Application examples

Analysing flood reduction measures for Corte Madera Creek

MIKE by DHI case story

The Corte Madera Creek watershed, also named the Ross Valley watershed, is located about 20km north of San Francisco in California. Due to its location, the area is naturally prone to flooding, causing events that threaten residents, local businesses and public safety. As a part of the ‘Ross Valley Watershed Flood Protection Program’, Stetson Engineers analysed alternatives for reducing flood damage in the area. For this purpose, they chose to apply MIKE by DHI hydraulic modelling tools to simulate the flood events and to create floodplain mapping for education of the surrounding community.

Developing a risk management system for Tai Lake Basin

Case story

In order to reduce the threat of socioeconomic losses and ecological damage due to inefficient management of pollution incidents of the Tai Lake Basin, the Ministry of Environmental Protection (PRC) approached us to come up with a solution. We developed various mathematical models of the Basin. Based on these models and our Decision Support System (DSS) technology, we also created a water environment risk management system, thereby facilitating better management of the precious resource.

We mainly used our MIKE 11 software to simulate one-dimensional river network and the water quality condition within Tai Lake Basin. Meanwhile, MIKE 21 software was used to simulate two-dimensional Tai Lake and its surrounding lake area. The result was enhanced water management capacity of the Tai Lake Basin and reduced risk of pollution incidents, socioeconomic losses and environmental damage.

Helping Vidaa river system adapt to climate change

Case story

Flood risk and dike safety with respect to climate change, are of concern to the Vidaa river system in Denmark. In order to understand the expected impacts of climate change on the river, we conducted extensive hydrological and hydraulic studies. As a result of our comprehensive analyses and projections, informed decisions on climate adaptation can now be taken with confidence.

We set up and calibrated a MIKE 11 integrated hydrological and hydraulic model of the Vidaa River catchment. We used Regional Climate Model (RCM) projections from the ENSEMBLES data archive for two projection horizons. We also used the Extreme Value Analysis (EVA) software for the risk analysis studies. The project showed how much flood risk is expected to increase in the future due to climate change. The results obtained in the study are currently used for evaluating different adaptation options for reducing future flood risks in the long-term planning of the area.

What our users say

“I used MIKE SHE to estimate the effects of two stream restoration practices (inset floodplains and channel spanning in-stream structures) on solute retention in streams. My model domain was 100m long and 75m wide (1m × 1m grid), so my project was at a smaller scale than typical MIKE SHE projects. However, the ability to work at various scales speaks to the flexibility of the model. MIKE SHE was the only model currently on the market that could run solute transport interchangeably between surface water (using the overland flow component) and the saturated zone. This was necessary to quantify and compare inset floodplain surface storage with in-structure induced hyporheic storage (within the saturated zone). While it does take some time to gain familiarity with the software, the ability to include or exclude different components (e.g., overland flow, saturated zone flow) is advantageous for solving different types of engineering problems. Having used MIKE SHE for both my thesis defense and an oral presentation at a conference, I can attest that the result viewer videos can effectively illustrate solute concentrations changing with time in groundwater and surface water (overland flow). I was told by several colleagues that they would not have understood my project without it and that the video was what they remembered most from the presentation.”

David Azinheira, Virginia Tech, United States.

User Group Meeting

FEFLOW 'Down Under' User Group Meeting 2013
19-21 June 2013

The 2nd Australian and New Zealand FEFLOW User Group Meeting will be held in Adelaide. The event will be a joint event with National Centre for Groundwater Research and Training (NCGRT), which reinforces the DHI-NCGRT partnership. The workshop will consist of two days of presentations. This will include keynotes from leading industry speakers as well as the FEFLOW 6.1 development team, highlighting the new capabilities of FEFLOW 6.1 and explaining future development directions.

An additional training day will give both beginners and experienced users the possibility to explore our groundwater modelling software more in detail. This includes an introduction to FEFLOW and MIKE SHE, using FEFLOW with PEST and the usage of FEFLOW according to the groundwater modelling guidelines.
