WEB in Wolfsburg in Germany uses MIKE URBAN

The wastewater authority of the city of Wolfsburg (Wolfsburger Entwässerungsbetrieb, WEB) has decided to use MIKE URBAN for hydraulic planning of the sewer system. The city of Wolfsburg is a major city in the northern part of Germany with approx. 122,000 inhabitants. MIKE URBAN will support the city in the master planning process giving hydraulic information and possibilities for extensive hydraulic measure planning within the city.

For more information, please contact Ralf Engels, DHI Germany.

Modelling the Tohoku tsunami in Japan

Tohuko tsunami

One year has now passed since the tragic tsunami of 11 March 2011. Together with the Danish Authorities and especially the Royal Danish Embassy in Japan, DHI has provided assistance to Higashi Matsushima city, which is one of the hardest affected communities along the coastline of the Tohoku region.

At Higashi Matsushima, the tsunami wave reached more than 10 m, propagated as far as 5 km inland, claiming at least 1039 lives of a population of 42,000, and destroyed more than 60 % of the city.

DHI offered assistance through modelling of the tsunami. The initial results are used by local authorities to identify safety areas for the reconstruction. The simulations were performed using MIKE 21 HD. The area covered is 1000 km2 for 45 km of coastline, and with grid resolutions of 50 m and 10 m. The model results have proved to be in agreement with available information.

Please click here to read more and to watch MIKE Animator videos of the tsunami.

For further information, please contact Mr. Francois Salesse, DHI Japan.

Modelling the 11 April mini-tsunami in the Indian Ocean

In the afternoon of 11 April 2012, an earthquake occurred 500 km off the north-western coast of Sumatra, near the region where the devastating Indian Ocean tsunami was generated in 2004. On 11 April, the earthquake was felt strongly in Sumatra, but also in Malaysia, Singapore, and even in places like Bangladesh and the Maldives.

The level of awareness was high, and shortly after the earthquake a tsunami warning was issued for the entire Indian Ocean due to a well-functioning tsunami watch, which was set into effect only seven minutes after the earthquake. Fortunately, a large tsunami did not materialise.

In order to be able to create tsunami warning systems, and similar measures of disaster management, precise tsunami modelling is highly important. DHI modelled the mini-tsunami with MIKE 21 HD and data from the first minutes after the earthquake, which resulted in a model outcome that closely matched the measured wave heights of the tsunami.

Product News

Previews of MIKE by DHI Release

As in previous issues of our newsletter, we would like to disclose some previews of the upcoming MIKE by DHI software package 2012, which is scheduled to be released this September. The release will contain various new and exciting features, which we hope will improve your experience when using the software products, both with regard to usability, productivity, and enhanced applications.

MIKE 21 2012: Rating curve boundary option in 2D overland flow models

Release 2012 introduces a new rating curve boundary option in MIKE 21.

Rating curve boundary option

Rating curves are relationships between water levels and discharges at a given boundary location and the calculation in MIKE 21 using rating curves therefore varies the calculated level at a boundary location in response to the outflowing discharge at that location. This functionality is new compared to existing options for defining boundaries in MIKE 21, where typically fixed or time varying values are applied for a state variable like water levels or flux. A similar Qh-boundary option has been available in MIKE 11 for a long time, and now becomes available with identical numerical functionality in all of the MIKE 21 engines (Rectilinear, Flexible Mesh, and Curvilinear) as well.

This new feature is particularly interesting for inland flood modelling, where boundary locations quite often do not have any recorded water level data. Instead, the relationship between level and discharge at the boundary location can be established and defined in MIKE 21 to allow for an alternative and flexible boundary option. Rating curves in MIKE 21 for boundary conditions are defined and saved in dfs0-files as illustrated below.

MIKE 11 2012: Improvement of MIKE 11 mapping

A 2D-mapping feature has been available in several releases of MIKE 11 and used for generating 2D maps from either stand-alone MIKE 11 simulations or as a mapping feature for combined 2D and 1D results when running a coupled (MIKE FLOOD) simulation.

Feature improvements for outputs of 2D maps produced from combined 1D and 2D simulations are implemented in Release 2012. Primarily, bathymetry files combining both the surface and river topography can be made on-the-fly without any previously needed additional processing, but result files content from combined 2D and 1D simulations for e.g. flood mapping are also adjusted for improved results presenting and animations capability. The illustration below presents the combined 2D and 1D bathymetry at the left and a combined flood map result on the right side.

The 14th UK user group meeting was a great success

On 20-21 March 2012 , the 14th UK user group meeting took place at the Lion Quays Waterside Resort in Oswestry, Shropshire. The agenda for the user group meeting included items such as presentations of new software features and technologies, user presentations as well as integrated training sessions and discussions. Similar to previous years, the two-day meeting was well attended by 65 participants, who provided very positive feedback.

“Thanks again for another enjoyable and useful UGM. It once more proved to be a helpful and enlightening few days.” Jack, ABPmer

“Thank you for the excellent DHI User Group meeting. It was my first conference experience since starting at Metoc and it was a very high standard and a pleasure to attend.” Gareth, Intertek

“Thank you all for the very well-organised event, wonderful hospitality, and the opportunity to meet MIKE developers and users – looking forward to the next meeting.” Zeinab, UCD

For more information, please click here or contact Steve Flood, DHI, UK.

User group meetings in Tokyo and Osaka

The 15th DUC (User Group Meeting) in Japan took place in Tokyo on 17 April. More than 50 participants spent an afternoon hearing presentations on the theme: “From disasters to reconstruction”.

Among the presenters were representatives from the city of Higashi Matsushima, one of the Japanese cities, which was hit very severely by the tsunami of 11 March 2011. The city representatives gave a first hand account of the disaster and of the early days of rescue operations and a status on the on-going reconstruction activities. DHI Japan has supported the reconstruction and disaster prevention activities through the development of a tsunami model for the city. Simulation results from the March tsunami were presented at the meeting. You can read more, and see animation examples at the top of this newsletter.

For the first time, the DUC was also conducted in Osaka. Here, the participants listened to interesting presentations on Research Case Studies using MIKE numerical models: Flood Control, Basin Management and Groundwater by Prof. Ohgushi from Saga University and on Groundwater Quality improvement using MIKE SHE by Prof. Tanaka from Shiga University.

Both DUCs were followed by VIP dinners.

Next year’s DUC will once again be in April and will include both Tokyo and Osaka.

3rd German user group meeting

The annual German MIKE by DHI user group meeting, held in Cologne in Germany on 25-26 April, attracted more than 40 participants and provided an unmatched platform for knowledge transfer and networking between MIKE by DHI users and DHI experts.

The two days were full of presentations, news and views of MIKE by DHI software products and case stories provided by our users. Especially forecasting, prevention and mitigation of urban flooding as well as ecological modelling were in the focus of interest. We would like to thank all participants for coming, the experiences shared and fruitful discussions.
