Hampton Roads Area Optimizes Infrastructure Plans

Hampton Roads Area Minimizes Sanitary Overflows & Optimizes Infrastructure Improvement Plans

Hampton Roads Sanitation District (HRSD) owns and operates an interceptor sewer system consisting of both gravity and force mains, and nine sewage treatment plants (STPs) servicing the Hampton Roads area.  Due to an aging infrastructure and continually growing population, HRSD and surrounding localities have entered into a State Order by Consent to evaluate the existing collection and conveyance systems and to develop a Regional Wet Weather Management Plan to minimize sanitary sewer overflows.

To facilitate the Regional Wet Weather Management Plan, HRSD will be providing a regionally integrated hydraulic model and each of the localities will develop a model of their sanitary sewer system.  HRSD, together with their consultant CDM, selected the MIKE URBAN modeling platform as the product best suited for this project for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Fully dynamic hydraulic solution
  • Stable and robust solution for transitions between gravity and pressure flows
  • Available real-time control options to represent complex operational rules
  • GIS platform supporting ArcSDE system integration
