Introduction to Groundwater Modelling

This 3-day course provides you with an introduction to groundwater modelling using FEFLOW. On the basis of a case study you build a three-dimensional flow and transport model applying the most important programme functions, including pre-processing, simulation and result evaluation. The course is aimed at groundwater professionals in consulting, research and public authorities. You are expected to have a basic knowledge in computer application as well as in groundwater modelling.

Topics

  • Introduction to FEFLOW and its graphical user interface
  • Introduction to flow and mass transport simulation
  • Setting up 2D and 3D flow models by using (GIS-) data interfaces
  • Extension of a flow model to a transport model
  • Pre and post processing
  • Map layout with FEPLOT
  • Visualising and animation using FEFLOW explorer
  • Automatic parameter determination with PEST
  • Case studies
  • Basic introduction to modelling density-dependent flow, reactive solute transport, heat transport and unsaturated conditions on demand
  • Hands-on exercises

Introduction to Groundwater Modelling (extended course)

This 5-day hands-on course consists of two parts. During the first part, you learn the basic concepts of the software, and the theoretical background of different modelling approaches is explained.

Topics

  • Designing the geometry of 2D and 3D models
  • Mesh Generation
  • Import and export of GIS and CAD data
  • Setting up flow models with confined and unconfined aquifers
  • Setting up transport models

The second part of the training aims at providing you with the skills for advanced modelling topics. Depending on the particular needs of the group of participants, a selection of the following topics is offered:

  • Unsaturated flow modelling
  • Density-dependent flow modelling
  • Heat transport modelling (geothermal energy systems)
  • Introduction to IFM programming
  • Fracture modelling
  • Multi-component transport and chemical reactions

FEFLOW 6.0 for 5.x users

This 2-day course aims at users who are already familiar with the current FEFLOW version 5.x and is intended to speed up the process of becoming familiar with the new software. You learn how to work with the new software during guided hands-on exercises. Prior experience with FEFLOW 5.x is required.

Topics

  • Overview of the new FEFLOW 6 workspace
  • New features for super mesh design and mesh generation
  • Visualization and assignment of model properties in 2D and 3D
  • Visualization, import and export of maps and GIS data
  • Running the simulation and post-processing (path lines, budget, etc.)
  • Tips and tricks
  • Hands-on exercises

This 2-day course gives an introduction to the numerical simulation of geothermal facilities using FEFLOW. Both deep and shallow geothermics are studied by setting up customised modelling applications. Specific topics can be offered on prior request. The course is aimed at experienced users of FEFLOW 5.x/6.

TOPICS

  • Coupling of flow and transport processes
  • Temperature and pressure dependence of fluid density, fluid viscosity, and rock thermal conductivity
  • Deep geothermics
  • Modelling of open loop systems
  • Modelling of fracture flow
  • Shallow geothermics
  • Numerical modelling of single and arrays of borehole heat exchangers
  • Data acquisition
  • Advanced procedures of data analysis and preparation
  • Postprocessing
  • Examples and case studies
  • Hands-on exercises
